Bio

Clizia Garrone

Born in Turin (Italy) in 1988, Clizia Garrone first studied art at high school before taking on fashion design at Milan’s NABA (New Academy of Fine Arts). Her final year project there, inspired by the Sapeurs of Congo, received a much deserved standing ovation. However, the artist’s most important project is undoubtedly Hatdicted, her own line of hair accessories and pins created in collaboration with colleague and friend, Raffaella Bichiri. Made of felt, the objects are inspired by cakes, pastries and other typical dishes. Eye candy that won’t hurt your figure, in other words. The brand has recently been expanded to include a collection of cute and comical apparel.

Interview

What has been your inspiration for the EASTPAK Artist Studio Bag(s)?
With my work, I wanted to represent not just something about my personality, but also something that could to represent my country, Italy, which influenced and still will be the future my own education and aesthetic.
With my drawn I wanted tell a history, this is the reason that I take inspiration from a Italian writer, Carlo Collodi, and his tale Pinocchio.
Pinocchio is not only a children fairy tale, is full of metaphor about human and society.
The metaphor of the donkey representing the transformation of the human being that want satisfy only its needs in a maturate person that have care of himself and of its education.
And also it representing the influence of the society, not always positive, on the way of acting and thinking of the modern human.

Which city do you live in – can you tell us what it’s best kept secret is?
My city, Turin, is a not too small town in Northern Italy. There is a big square where I spend a lot of time, in particular in the night; is like my second home. Despite that when I see it, in a sunny day, with a blue sky, in front the river and the hill, I can't move me.

When was the last time you did something for the first time?
A month ago, when I was in Antwerp, I did my first piercing. For a lot of people is a normal thing. For me was not only an aesthetic choice but also a little test of courage. Overcoming this fear makes me ideally more strong for go through an ordeal.

Can you name three major things on your ‘bucketlist’ – three things you want to do before you ‘kick the bucket’…
See a polar bear at the North Pole
Take a long trip alone
Do something really useful and important to help a person and feel that you have done for it, actually, the difference.

The proceeds from the sales of your bag will go entirely to Designers Against AIDS – What are your views on safe sex? Do you personally think it’s still important?
I always trust in the importance of safe sex and the collaboration with DAA help me to know more information about AIDS/HIV problem.
I find essential the message of prevention. It’s through an awareness campaign for safe sex that you can actually lower the number of people with sexually transmitted diseases.
