Bio

Clean

Frederik L. Hesseldahl is a Danish student of architecture with 15 years experience in graffiti art. Known mostly as Clean, he has painted virtually everything from 100 m2 mural paintings to Mini Coopers and clothes for famous fashion houses. He also paints live at large concerts and festivals and creates set designs for film, theatre and music videos. The development of his graffiti idiom has led to a very colorful and graphically expressive style. Among his major works are “CLEAN GOES FASHION” and his “3D graffiti puzzle” installation at the Roskilde festival.

Phelie aka. Philip Johnsen hails from Copenhagen where he has roots (and 15 years’ experience) in the graffiti world. Philip is primarily known for his 3D thinking in graffiti but also paints on canvas where he focuses on the color interaction, color fusion and the chemical reactions that occur when different types of paints are mixed. There are many different layers and surfaces in his paintings, typically in bright neon colors.

Interview

What has been your inspiration for the EASTPAK Artist Studio Bag(s)?
Frederik: The inspiration for the Eastpak Artist Studio bag was to consider the bag as a painting and working with my graphic language in a Japanese minimalist style.

Philip: The inspiration for our Eastpak Artist studio bag has been to mix our artistic styles. We would like to create the bag in a sculptural way, where we could confront it as an
installetion object. The bag is made in collaboration between Clean and Phelie.

Which city do you live in – can you tell us what it’s best kept secret is?
Frederik: Clean b. ´79, is from Copenhagen, and he IS the city’s best kept secret.

Philip: In pantomime theater in Tivoli I painted a 12 x 5 meter backdrop as scenography for pantomime Hip Hop show “Kassander Loves Dollars. Unbelievable enough to see my own style on the oldest theater in Denmark, hanging beside the Queen of Denmark’s works.

When was the last time you did something for the first time?
Frederik: Just recently I had the first time permitted to exhibit at a museum, as part of a group exhibition, with very talented and inspiring artists at Vejle Art Museum with the exhibition Street Art - Inspiration. This hope that I can continue doing this a lot more.

Philip: Clean b. ´79, is from Copenhagen, and he IS the city’s best kept secret.

Can you name three major things on your ‘bucketlist’ – three things you want to do before you ‘kick the bucket’…
Frederik: Before I “Kick the bucket” I would like to have a solo exhibition at a well renoumed museum, and have made several iconic buildings and to get world recognizion for my art.

Philip: I have previously painted a 100m2 mural along with 4 other artists, but to be allowed to do one of these walls solo, is clearly on to-do list. Additionally, I also like to find a new technique that could exploit future media in an innovative manner. Last try is to paint with a fire extinguisher filled with paint, so I could have the opportunity to make lines that are 10 feet wide.

The proceeds from the sales of your bag will go entirely to Designers Against AIDS – What are your views on safe sex? Do you personally think it’s still important?
Frederik: We are supporting Designers Against Aids trough our contribution to Eastpak artist studio, and we think that safe sex is really important in the developing world! There are huge amounts of people in southern afrika suffering from aids and the catholic church and its rules prevent them from having safe sex, this is wrong in so many levels, and only though more education, condoms and the church opening up their restrictions, will we see the end of this injustice.
